An Early Pregnancy Assessment Service EPAS is a dedicated department within the maternity unit that provides care for women with problems in early pregnancy. The main reason for referral is to check the health of a pregnancy following an episode of pain or bleeding.
Bleeding is a common symptom in early pregnancy. This is when the developing embryo implants itself in the wall of your womb. This type of bleeding often happens around the time your period would have been due. Pregnancy can cause changes to the cervix, and this may sometimes cause bleeding — after sex, for example.
Can a 12 week dating scan be wrong
The early stages in life are the most critical time. It is reassuring to know everything is as it should be. Early in pregnancy there maybe few signs to suggest that you are pregnant. Ultrasound scanning in early pregnancy can provide that confirmation and peace of mind that you need. Most women in early pregnancy experience no problems, but not all.

In order to meet the demand for scans the clinic has a tight appointment schedule and it is therefore very important that you arrive in time. If you arrive late, we may not be able to scan you and may have to reschedule your appointment. Your choice will be respected if you decide not to have the scans, and you’ll be given the chance to discuss it with your maternity team before making your decision.
This first routine scan is carried out for the following reasons:. It is not diagnostic. We also like to arrange this for around 12 weeks, but it can be performed between 10 and 14 weeks. Occasionally during the scan, a miscarriage might be diagnosed even though you might still ‘feel pregnant’. For the majority of women, the week scan is a reassuring and memorable experience, but sometimes problems are found. Some findings may not be significant and will resolve themselves. Others can forewarn of problems that would otherwise not be detected until birth or even infancy.
Some information can cause considerable anxiety and can lead parents to consider options regarding continuation of the pregnancy. It is important to remember that only some abnormalities can be detected by scan; others are difficult to detect and therefore may be overlooked by scan, while some do not develop until later in the pregnancy or after birth.
